“There is no sugarcoating it: these are hard times, very hard times indeed.” Barbara Moore
((The Steampunk Tarot, Moore and Fell))
Physical need (as represented in the card above) suggests a lack of most basic comforts such as food and shelter; there are people suffering in the world for lack of the most basic necessities, and we should all remember that when we want to complain about the price of gas as we fill our BMW or become overly irritated by an iPhone not sending a text. The Five of Pentacles is not here to commiserate, it is a reminder:
Maintain an attitude of gratitude.
- Do not complain about your long drive to work; you have a car.
- Do not complain about your heavy workload; you have a job.
- Do not complain about the busy schedule of your children; they have social lives.
Also portrayed on this card:
We are in this together.
((The following is meant to be a human statement, not a political one.))
We cannot “build a wall” as the answer to our place in the global community; isolationism (local, federal, national) is not the answer. We live in a global world; all the problems of this world belong to all of us. (If you doubt this, go back to school and demand to be taught the whole truth about The War in Europe that became World War II – do not let yourself be put off with “we won.” as an answer because it is not.)
The World matters to us because we live here, and we are in this together, for better or for worse – the choice is our own.
